STOP WHIRLING DISEASE

(Sep 19) Fishing has started to pick up some with the cooler weather. Trolling was producing the most results in 60 to 75 feet of water. Lake trout from three to ten pounds have been reported. Bear Lake Biologist Scott Tolentino says jig fishing will start to pick up as lake trout start to stage and gather for their annual spawning run. The cisco run last winter was productive and Tolention predicted at that time that there would be a good food.

Rainbow Trout

(Sep 19) Anderson Meadow and Kent's Lake have had the most consistent fishing, as well as the most pressure. Kent's is at conservation pool level and has quite a bit of algae in it, limiting visibility. Most anglers are using worms and PowerBait. Lower Kent's, LaBaron, and Puffer Lake also have algae blooms. The water in Little Reservoir has improved and Anderson Meadow is clear. Moss along the edges makes fishing more difficult.

Beaver River

Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout

STOP WHIRLING DISEASE

(Sep 19) LOWER: Pressure is moderate and success is fair to good. Brown trout get aggressive in the fall as they prepare to spawn, so try fishing streamers or flashy lures. Egg patterns are also effective. Recent sampling found abundant rainbows and browns. There are a surprising number of fish in the river.

UPPER: Pressure is light. Fishing is fair to good for small browns and rainbows with a dry fly-dropper combo. Lures and bait should also produce. Brown trout get aggressive in the fall as they prepare to spawn, so try fishing streamers or flashy lures. Egg patterns are also effective.

Brother fished the point 100yds towards the dam and was bringing in many 11-14 inch smallies on plastic worms and jigs. Fish were very aggresive and fighting extremly well, even taking to the air from time to time."

(Sep 1) Dominique A. of West Valley fished with a partner using standard baits and worms. "Caught a crawdad accidentally, that was the only thing that we got"

East Fork of Sevier River

Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout

Fish Lake

Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Mackinaw (Lake Trout), Splake (hybrid), Rainbow Trout, Yellow Perch

STOP WHIRLING DISEASE

(Sep 19) Fishing for perch is fast by jigging just off the weedline. Fishing for splake should pick up soon as the weather cools. Good success for rainbows trolling pop gear in 15 to 20 feet or stillfishing PowerBait from a boat. Trolling for lake trout is slow to fair some action trolling at 70 to 80 feet. A few tiger muskies have moved up from Johnson Reservoir.

Flaming Gorge Reservoir

Brown Trout, Burbot, Channel Catfish, Crayfish, Kokanee Salmon, Mackinaw (Lake Trout), Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth Bass

(Sep 22) Current surface water temps 62 - 66 degrees. Fishing has improved over the last couple weeks. Lake Trout Fishing: Good fishing for small lake trout on most areas of the reservoir. Fish are in traditional areas on underwater humps and points. Fishing for smaller lake trout from Big Bend south in 70-100 ft has been fair to good. The canyon from Jarvies to Red Canyon has been producing limits of smaller fish. Use downriggers to troll spoons and minnow plugs within 10 to 20 feet of the bottom or look for suspended fish 70 -90 ft. Good colors for spoons and plugs include chartreuse, orange and white. If fish are concentrated try jigging. Good jig colors are white, brown and chartreuse. Try tipping jigs with a small chunk of sucker meat if you can see them on your graph but can't get them to bite with a plain jig. If you are seeing fish near structure in 100 plus feet, these will probably be lake trout. Use no stretch line to feel strikes and set the hook better. Unlike their larger relatives, the smaller lake trout are excellent table fair with orange flesh and taste as good or better than a rainbow when cooked up on the grill. There's an overabundance of lake trout under 28" in the Gorge so do your part to help the fishery and keep a limit of 8 fish.

Reports of fair fishing for larger lake trout. For larger lake trout try trolling plugs on downriggers, steel or lead core in Jarvies, Sheep Creek, Linwood, Stateline, Antelope flat, Anvil Draw. Also jigging with 3 to 10 inch jigs can work well. Big lake trout eat big food so lures and jigs can be big also. Remember, only one fish over 28" can be kept.

Kokanee Fishing: All kokanee caught from Sept 10th to Nov 30th must be immediately released to protect spawning fish. Kokanee can still be caught and released.

Rainbow Fishing: Fair to good fishing for rainbows on most of the reservoir. If fishing from a boat try trolling spoons or rapalas with downriggers or try long lining with at least 100 feet of line behind boat. The majority of fish seem to be in 30 to 50 ft. Most colors of spoons and minnow lures will work but go with lures in the one to two inch size. If fishing on bottom, try a worm and marshmellow combo to keep the bait slightly off the bottom. Casting spoons, spinners or smaller crankbiats from shore also works well in early mornings when water temps are cooler. In the Utah portion, Sheep Creek, Jarvies, Linwood Bay, Mustang Ridge and off the dam visitor center are all good locations to catch rainbows from shore. Rainbow fishing will continue to get better as fall progresses and they will become more accessible to shore anglers.

Burbot Fishing: Try fishing with jigs late in the afternoon, early morning or at night on points coming into reservoir. These fish move deep so adjust your location accordingly. Reports of burbot being caught in 100 plus feet of water. These fish must be harvested if caught in Utah to help control their population as they were illegally introduced to the upper Green River drainage and could have a major impact on other fish species. They are an excellent eating fish with white, flaky flesh that is similar to a perch. They can be breaded and fried or boiled and dipped in melted butter. Most of these fish are concentrated in the WY portion of the reservoir but are in the Antelope Falt/Linwood areas in smaller numbers.

Smallmouth Bass Fishing: Smallmouth fishing is fair to good as fish have moved shallower. Use twist tail grubs on lead head jigs or small plastic worms, sinkos, twitch and crankbaits in about 5 to 30 feet of water off rocky shorelines and points. Crayfish imitation colors will work the best. Drop shot techniques will also work. Top water presentations can work early in the morning and later in the afternoon. Smaller fish are close to shore and can be a good way for kids to catch fish.

(Sep 8) William S. of Holladay fished from the 3rd to the 8th and reports catching nothing. "5 days of the worst fishing of our life. No bites, no strikes – nothing. Even our fish finder showed nothing. Skunked big time. We fished the north, the middle and the south end- we trolled, we used minnow bait- we jigged with ‘sucker’ meat. I made it a point to talk with other boats fishing – they too reported nothing."

Forsyth Reservoir

Rainbow Trout, Splake (hybrid), Tiger Trout (hybrid)

STOP WHIRLING DISEASE

(Sep 19) The reservoir is about half full, and launching large boats is difficult small boats can be launched. One report of fair to good fishing for tiger trout casting and trolling a gold Jake's Spin-a-lure and wooly buggers.

Fort Buenaventura

Fremont River

Rainbow Trout

STOP WHIRLING DISEASE

(Sep 19) Flows above Mill Meadow are still high and turbid, though irrigation releases from Johnson Reservoir could end at any time. Brown trout get aggressive in the fall as they prepare to spawn, so try fishing streamers or flashy lures. Egg patterns are also effective. Brown trout are abundant above Mill Meadow Res. and will take most flies or spinners. The lower sections of the stream can be good at any time of year if the water is not turbid.

Gigliotti Pond

Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, Rainbow Trout

(Sep 25) The catch-rate was super for the Kids' Fishing Day last weekend. Anglers using red and white daredevils had non-stop action. Nightcrawlers, salmon eggs and white PowerBait were also effective.

Green River

Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Channel Catfish, Cutthroat Trout, Northern Pike, Rainbow Trout

STOP NEW ZEALAND MUDSNAIL

(Sep 22) The flows on the river are currently 800 cfs. Due to low inflows into the reservoir in 2007, flows should remain steady at 800 cfs throughout the winter to conserve water. Good fishing on the river. The traffic on the river has dropped and fishing success has increased. Dry flies are still working in numerous patterns and nymphing almost always works. Brown Trout will begin to spawn in a month or so so be aware of spawning redds when wading. Fishing will continue to improve through the fall and use on the river will continue to drop. The upcoming months are some of the best for avoiding crowds and enjoying nice weather. Spin fishermen should try small rapalas (floating, countdown and husky jerk); small spinners; black, brown or olive marabou jigs; and small jigs.

STOP QUAGGAG MUSCLE

(Sep 25) By Wayne Gustaveson: Lake elevation: 3,601 ft., water temperature: 71–74° F.

Details of this report will include general concepts that will work through mid-October. I will be on vacation for two weeks so there will be no new fish reports until I return.

Water temperature continues to fall as nights are cool and days short. In springtime, temperatures in the 60's and low 70's are the periods of greatest fish activity. That works just the same in the fall. Expect bass, stripers, walleye and sunfish to feed heavily before it cools enough to cause inactivity in forage fish and predators alike.

Bass are feeding on shad, sunfish and crayfish in shallows. Lake level decline is stranding more aquatic weed beds each day. Forage fish hiding in weeds must relocate as the weeds dry up. Sunfish and shad are vulnerable to predation during the relocation process. Largemouth bass are very shallow as they live in the grass with sunfish. They can be caught next to shore or on very shallow flats that may not be deep enough for boat operation. Find weed and largemouth are close. Use surface lures or weedless presentations to fish shallow weeds. Plunking a fluke or senko into an open pocket in a weed mat can be deadly.

Smallmouth bass will be on rocks because that is their preferred habitat. That means crayfish are more important in their diet. If prey fish swim by, they will attack, but their primary search image is bottom-oriented. Fishing with bottom bouncing grubs/tubes in open water is more likely to be rewarded with smallmouth than any other species. Crayfish-imitating lures fished slowly on the bottom around rocks is the best technique for catching smallmouth bass. As I write this, smallmouth bass are more often found on the "outside edges" meaning they are more likely to be on the main channel side of a rock, instead of the side nearest shore. That can change on a daily basis, but for starters look on the deep water side of a rock ridge and then adjust as needed.

Striped bass are hungry and constantly looking for fish forage in open water. They are most talented at feeding and trapping prey in open water. They have little finesse while working a weedy bottom near shore. A good general strategy is to fish the outside reefs for bass while keeping an eye on the graph for fish in deep water. A spoon can be rigged and waiting. Employ the spoon at the first sign of multiple fish at 30 feet or deeper. These fish could be a school of larger bass or a striper school. Either one will be fun.

Active stripers will respond immediately to a shad (spoon) dropped into a school. Stripers are so competitive that they rush to see which fish can get the shad first. The entire school responds to a single feeding opportunity. Draw the school off the bottom by hooking one fish, and keep them going with a shower of anchovy chum at 10-minute intervals. Striper schools will suspend under the boat, often following it, and actively feed, sometimes for hours, as long as bait is presented.

Some striper starting spots include: Warm Creek near the floating restroom, Rock Creek in all three arms, Oak Canyon, Piute and Neskahi Canyon on the San Juan, main channel near mouth of Long Canyon, main channel at buoy 86A, dome rock in Bullfrog Bay, mouth of Knowles Canyon, and Striper City from the horn at Good Hope to White Canyon.

Don't be surprised to catch a big catfish, walleye, sunfish or crappie. All fish are active at this temperature range.

LaSal Mountains

Albino Trout, Bluegill, Grayling, Largemouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, Splake (hybrid)

(Sep 19) Conservation Officer TJ Robertson reports that smallmouth bass action is improving on the northwest side of Ken's Lake. Robertson recommends a brown Yamamoto doubletail plastic grub with green speckles. Trout are biting on worms and PowerBait. Robertson says there was a lot of fishing pressure at Hidden and Dons lakes. Trout have been taking just about anything. In the early morning, fly fishermen have had good luck at Dons. Try worms or PowerBait at Dark Canyon. A black wooly bugger or PowerBait is recommended for Warner Lake.

(Sep 19) Fishing has picked up again with anglers catching good numbers of bass and bluegill. Buzzbaits and poppers have been effective for bass and the "ole standard" mini jig tipped with worm was working for bluegill and perch.

Matt Warner Reservoir

Brook Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout

(Sep 22) Matt Warner has open water and the access road is in good condition. The fishing has been good for fat rainbows and a few brook trout. There is a lot of moss this time of year. Shore anglers will find access near the dam and boat ramp. Float your bait off the bottom to get it above the weeds. The water level is good for this time of year and the road was recently graded. Matt Warner is a great float tube lake.

(Aug 28) Dedicated Hunter Rob Toler described fishing as good with flies or spinners but poor with baits. Toler recommended a purple Blue Fox for spincasters.

Millsite Reservoir

Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout

(Sep 6) Park Manager Dan Richards suggests trolling with Shad Raps or Roostertails in 6 to 12 feet of water. Bank fishing is best on rocky shorelines in the evening with worms or PowerBait.

Minersville Reservoir

Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth Bass

STOP WHIRLING DISEASE

(Sep 19) The water level is low, though there was no indication of a significant fish kill and conditions should be improving soon with cooler weather and the end of irrigation. Fishing could pick up at any time as the water cools and fish move into shallow water. Some hooking mortality was observed, so anglers need to make an extra effort to limit the amount of stress put on fish they catch. Trolling with lures with treble hooks seems to be especially hard on the fish. Using single hooks and releasing fish without removing them from the water will help reduce stress. Some anglers have caught smallmouth bass on the rocky shorelines. Most of these fish are small — eight or nine inches.

(Sep 4) Ray and Marlys of Las Vegas caught 11 rainbows. "Decent fishing eight over 18 in."

Monroe Mountain Lakes

Rainbow Trout, Tiger Trout (hybrid)

(Sep 19) The water levels in many of the lakes have been dropping. Fishing is still good at all of the lakes. Barney Lake: Good success reported for 15- to 20-inch tiger trout. Try wooly buggers fished deep and slow. Manning Meadow Reservoir: Fair to good success with wooly buggers and flashy lures. Best success in the upper end.

Moon Lake

Brook Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Splake (hybrid), Whitefish

No recent reports.

Navajo Lake

Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout

(Sep 19) Fishing should be fair to good as the weather cools. Flashy lures have worked well all year for rainbows and splake. Also try casting wooly buggers from a boat or float tube. Good numbers of brook trout are also present. Try dark-colored marabou jigs and wooly buggers for brook trout.

Newcastle Reservoir

Smallmouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, Wiper (hybrid)

FISH CONSUMPTION ADVISORY

(Sep 19) Wiper fishing has slowed down again. One angler reports success very early before the sun comes up. Fair to good success for medium-sized smallmouth bass casting crankbaits and lures in the shallow upper end of the reservoir.

Newton Reservoir

Bass, Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Rainbow Trout, Tiger Musky (hybrid), Yellow Perch

(Aug 29) The water is very low and biologist Ben Nadalski is concerned about the water conditions. In 2003 low water resulted in major fish losses at Newton. Nadalski is planning on surveying the Newton in November to see how fish fared the warm, low water this year. In the mean time, fishing continues to be very good and families are reporting fun outings with lots of fishing action for perch and bass. Tiger muskie fishing also remains good.

Nine Mile Reservoir

Ogden River

Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout

STOP WHIRLING DISEASE

(Sep 19) Shane of Ogden fished near the Oaks using flies without catching anything. "The river is very low. I did get some hits on a dry fly but it was really slow."

(Sep 19) The water is running low and clear and there are lots of brown trout through the canyon. Please respect private property. The Walk-In Access Points by the Oaks is always a good place to start. South Fork anglers are catching browns and splake with spinners.

Otter Creek Reservoir

Rainbow Trout

STOP WHIRLING DISEASE

(Sep 19) Water level is low, but releases from the reservoir have been shut off. No problem launching boats. Trolling is still fair to good and should get very good as the water cools. Shore fishing will improve as fish move into shallow water again. Lumps and sores have started to show up on some rainbows at Otter Creek. These are caused by a skin infection brought on by the warm water temperature. This infection affects only the skin, so the flesh is safe to eat. The infection will dissipate as the water cools later in the fall.

Palisade Reservoir

Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Tiger Trout (hybrid)

No recent reports.

Panguitch Lake

Brook Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Tiger Trout (hybrid)
