In late 2006 Humminbird introduced the 797 c2 SI unit, a compact version of the 987 SI that hit the market 2005. The 797 c2 SI has a smaller sized screen but still has the capability to view from 0 to 360 feet either side of the boat in a 3-dimensional view. After seeing the number of anglers who wanted the side imaging technology but did not have the space for the larger unit the 797 was introduced. The side imaging can be set to view only one side if so desired.

One of the great features of the 797 is the ability to take ‘snapshot’ of a particular screen view with SD card inserted in the slot. This can then be uploaded to computer for permanent reference. The snapshot is actually a capture of screen and at the same time creates a waypoint. As objects are seen on the screen in the side imaging mode it is possible to mark them with a waypoint even when they are some distance to the side and in back of current boat position.

The image seen in the side imaging mode is some what confusing at first until you look at it like there is a light shining out and as something like a tree is seen there is a shadow associated with that tree. Much the same way when the side imaging sees fish out away from the boat path a shadow will also be present. After may years of watching conventional sonar it takes some time getting to understand what the side imaging soanr is showing.

With all the good points there are a couple of not so good points. First the Side Imaging transducer has to be mounted so that it has a clear view to either side and therefore must either be mounted on the boat’s transom or on trolling motor. The second is that at speed above 10 to 15 mph the transducer will loose the bottom. This can be overcome with a second transducer and a switch to choose between transducers as needed.

All in all the unit is highly sophisticated, but with a little time spent learning the features even a novice will find it and exceptional tool in quest of more fish. Many who have purchase one of the side imaging units have complained that they are spending more time learning to use the side imaging than fishing, but once they have learned to use it they are finding it an exceptional tool
