Ice Fishing Tips
Ice Fishing
When ice fishing drilling with a power auger will spook the fish. A hand auger will will get you alot more fish.
Placing Bait for Pike
Usually pike stay pretty close to the bottom of the lake in the winter. When you put your bait in the water, keep in mind that a pikes eyes are on the top of its head, so they only see food higher then them, so it is best to bring the bait up off of the bottom quite a bit so they will see it.
Light Biting Crappies
When ice fishing for Crappies, a problem most ice fisherman have is feeling them hit. Here are some tips. If you jig, place the tip of your finger on the end of the rod blank. This increases sensitivity. If you still fish, watch your rod tip for the slightest movement. If you see or feel anything unusual, set the hook.
Auger Scaring Fish
It is best to make the hole(s) and then come back a few hours later. By then the fish should have returned. If the hole is freezing over, leave a black garbage bag over the hole and snow to hold down the edges. The sun on the dark bag will keep it from freezing.
Line
It is important to use mono specifically made for ice fishing. Braided lines work just as well since they do not absorb any water.
Night Fishing With Tip Ups
When night fishing with tip ups have a little light attached to it that signals you when you have a flag.
Bite Detecters
Very good tool to have when fish are biting light, it picks up any little tap and doesn't apply any pressure back.
Ice Fishing For Perch
When going out for a day of icefishing for perch start by drilling a hole through the ice and using the side view setting on your electronic fish finder. Turn the transducer slowly in the water and look for weeds, keep repeating this process until you find a weed bed. Then drill all the holes you need along the outside edge of them and enjoy your catch.
Tip Up Fishing
When using minnows on a tip up, hook the minnows by the tail. This keeps them alive longer and they move a lot more. This will attract fish.
Ice Fishing for Largemouth Bass
Use tip-ups rigged with a medium shiner when ice fishing for Largemouth. You never know what you will get, but hopefully it will be a nice 4 plus pound bass. When you see the tip-up spool going real fast, it is either a bass or pike. If you set the hook and have nothing but weeds, a bass just robbed you!
Line From Frezing
When fishing in cold weather and you want to keep your guides from freezing; spray them with PAM cooking oil.
